Este filme conta a história real de um cão especial chamado Red Dog por causa da poeira do deserto.

Toda a gente daquela pequena cidade de Austrália conhece Red, todos cuidam dele como se ele lhes pertencesse, alimentam-no dão-lhe carinho e atenção.

Mas Red é um cão livre que não tem nem quer dono, ele é o cão da cidade. Até que conhece John, o homem que ele decide escolher como o seu único e verdadeiro dono.
